05 Dec Focus on Breastfeeding
We are proud to announce that we have expanded our lactation services! All of our breastfeeding services are open to the public. You don’t have to give birth with us to take advantage of our comprehensive lactation program.
Our team of IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) is available for lactation consultations Monday through Friday at our Bryn Mawr location, and Thursdays at our South Philly satellite office. We accept most major insurance, and lactation visits are almost always covered (there is sometimes a copay involved, reach out to our billing department for more information about your specific plan).
We have also added nine prenatal breastfeeding classes to our 2019 schedule. Our Focus on Breastfeeding class is designed to prepare parents for their breastfeeding journey. The class covers the benefits of breastfeeding, anatomy and physiology or the breast, composition of breastmilk, positioning and latching, how to know your baby is getting enough, and pumping and storing milk.
In August, during World Breastfeeding Week, Lifecycle WomanCare became a human milk bank depot,
accepting milk from approved donors for the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank (MAMMB). We are now equipped to house and ship milk from approved donors, making milk donation convenient and accessible to donors in our area. Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank is a nonprofit milk bank that serves Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the Mid-Atlantic states. MAMMB provides pasteurized milk from screened donors to hospitals and outpatients by prescription only.
All babies benefit from human milk, but for medically fragile or premature infants, breast milk is even more critical. It is lifesaving. “The use of donor milk for ill or premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit who do not have access to their mother’s own milk is emerging as the standard of care across the country,” according to Denise O’Connor, executive director of MAMMB. “Having a local presence will also spread the word about donation to help us meet the ever-growing demand as clinicians see what donor milk can do to help medically fragile children thrive.”
