Working within the midwifery model of care, we offer individualized fertility services to guide you on your journey to parenthood from preconception to birth. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a widely-used method of assisted insemination that helps individuals and couples realize their dreams of starting or expanding their families. These services are especially designed to support queer and/or solo parents conceive with donor sperm in a non-pathologizing and minimally-medicalized environment. 

 

What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a procedure that assists individuals or couples in their quest to conceive. It involves the introduction of sperm directly into the uterus through the cervix which increases the chances of fertilization.

 

What is included in IUI care at LWC?

There are three stages to IUI care:

• Consultation

The IUI process at LWC begins with a consultation appointment during which the provider will:

• Review your medical and reproductive history 
• Discuss how to monitor your menstrual cycle and signs of ovulation at home. 
• Provide preconception counseling (including lab work when indicated)
• Review the IUI procedure and provide resources for acquiring donor sperm
• In cases of infertility we can refer you to a reproductive endocrinologist

 

• Follow up Appointment

An optional followup visit can be scheduled in person or via telehealth to review menstrual charts and answer questions can be scheduled as needed. 

• IUI Procedure

The IUI procedure will be scheduled based on your menstrual cycle and timing around your predicted ovulation. During the procedure, a thin, flexible catheter is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. The prepared sperm is then introduced directly into the uterus to enhance the chances of the sperm reaching and fertilizing the egg. IUI is relatively quick and minimally invasive.

Q1: Does IUI hurt? 

No, IUI is typically painless and doesn’t require anesthesia. You may experience mild discomfort, similar to menstrual cramps, during or after the procedure.

 

Q2: When does implantation occur after an IUI? 

Implantation usually occurs about 5 to 6 days after the procedure.

 

Q3: How many IUI cycles are typically needed? 

The number of cycles varies depending on your specific situation. Some achieve pregnancy in just a few cycles, while others may need more attempts. Your healthcare provider will guide you based on your individual needs.

The out of pocket costs for IUI at LWC is $300 per insemination.
